Be Salt in Other's Life
Scripture: Luke 14:34-35
34 "Salt is good; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is fit neither for the land nor for the dunghill; men throw it away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
This may be one of the beautiful example of discipleship. Throughout his preaching, we find that Jesus always uses ordinary images to convey the extraordinary truths . In this Gospel also, he uses salt to teach us about the kingdom of God.
Salt, as we all know, is an indispensable part of our life. It serves the trivial purpose of Purification , Preservation and Penetration. Without salt , most of our dishes might turn tasteless. Salt is also an excellent preservative . Even though Salt is having these Qualities, can we ever imagine drinking a cup of salt water or eating a T-spoon of salt ? We never does that because salt needs to be mixed with other items to get its purpose served.
Jesus in this example, is helping us to relate our lives to salt. As individuals, we possess strong qualities. Some of us might be good at Loving, some at Caring, some at preaching, and some others at Serving . But these Qualities stands no good unless we mix with others , as in the case of salt. We need to use these Qualities to give taste to the lives of other’s. As disciples of Christ, we are called to live in a society, where we can mix up with others , we can work together to build the kingdom of God. So, when we do this together, we become salt in others life. This example also shows us the importance of a Societal Christian Life . Building the kingdom of God is much easier when we work together than working in silos.
Another aspect of this scripture can be seen in our professional lives. All of us work in teams & as team members we need to contribute our part to build a good project. As in the example of salt, we see that salt once added to a dish cannot be seen again. It gets mixed well with the dish. But think of other dish enablers like Curry Leaves or Green Chillies. Even after getting mixed in the dish, they can be seen separately. And what happens to them at the end ? Most of us pick these curry leaves, chilies and place them outside of out plates and ultimately end up in the waste bins. But salt. Since it is invisible, it is inseparable. We consume it and becomes a part of our digestive systems. When we are teams, we can either be salt or be a Curry Leaf. We can just work to meet our Goals and be a curry leaf or we can work with Full dedication, Full Heart and Mind to become the salt of our projects. You can either give taste to the project and move out or give yourself best to the project and win the heart of others. At the end, Lord is not expecting for our visibility like a Green Chilly, but for our invisibility like that of a salt. As a salt, we are not only expected to meet our goals, but also need to work with others , helping them to meet their Goals. This is achievable only when we give mix up with our colleagues and give ourselves fully to them. And when we lose the Quality of working with others, serving them and sacrificing our lives for them we become the salt which lost its saltines . We may be ignored by others.
We may change projects, we may change companies but being salt we will always remain the hearts of people ….
