Emotional Equation
When we were in school, we learned algebra and most of us were puzzled with the game of constants and variables in an equation. Most of the time we had to play with these variables ( X, Y OR Z being the hero’s) and constants (A, B or C ). This is true and we see it in our daily life also.
The constant in our life’s equation is nothing but The Suffering. There will always be sufferings. You can’t escape from that. There could be sufferings in your Job, in your families; in your relationships etc .But there is also a variable in your life which is nothing but The Meaning: How do we find a sense of meaning, even in the most difficult times?
Now the interesting part is establishing a relationship between constants and the variables. I would always love to define the EMOTIONAL EQUATION OF A CHRISTIAN LIFE as
UN HAPPINESS = SUFFERING - MEANING
This is a question that I ‘would love to ask myself a 1000 times because if you can find meaning in your troubles, you will lessen your unhappiness. That’s how this equation works: more meaning equals less unhappiness. Yet, most of us in a difficult time put our attention on the suffering.
The greatest application of this equation can be seen at the cross in Calvary. When Jesus was carrying the cross to Calvary he was in suffering, he was in deep pain. But It never made him unhappy. He was able to find the deeper meaning of his sufferings – SAVING THE PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS. When Jesus realized this greater meaning, he overcame his unhappiness and despair and was able to die on the cross with peace and happiness.
Success in life is all about where you place your attention. When we are going through pains /sufferings in our life, rather than cursing the sufferings (Cursing them does not make an impact as they are CONSTANTS J ) let us try to find out the deeper meaning of those pains. Let us try and understand the God’s plan behind those sufferings. Life will be always happy for us.
